How to Make a Vision Board in Canva: Resolution Support

Creating a Vision Board Using Canva: A Step-by-Step Guide

We are officially two weeks into the New Year at the time of this writing. How is your New Year’s Resolution coming along? If you have stuck with it, awesome.

How to make a Vision Board in CANVA

Suppose you have faltered but come back to it- excellent! To err is human, and getting back on the horse is the best thing you can do for yourself: dust off the pants and set your fanny back in the saddle. Riding again after the fall builds resilience, strength, self-trust, and fortitude as nothing else can. Good stuff. Giddyup!

If you did not set an intention for the year, no problem. Now is the time. It is not too late. Today is your day and the perfect, best day to do it. Because THE NOW is the only time we really and truly have.

Let’s get started.

First off, what the heck is a vision board? A vision board is a powerful tool that can help you clarify and focus on your goals and aspirations by making them more clear- envisioning them.

Traditionally, a vision board is created using a physical board with pictures, typically magazine cut-outs. But with the advent of digital tools, it's now possible to create a vision board online using platforms like Canva.

I am a big fan of vision boards. The power of visualization for creating and actualizing intentions (Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain is a great reference) cannot be underscored enough. This is not woo-woo stuff, just metaphysics.

Did you know that what you consume consistently directly affects the outcomes you are essentially directing?

Did you know that when you are clear about what you want and consciously, consistently bring attention to this desire, it becomes markedly more likely that you will arrive at this destination?

Why?

Because we make little choices every day, these choices are often made unconsciously, in the blink of an eye, hundreds a day. Your choices are more likely to align with your intentions if you see them daily. And these simple things, done daily, will steadily and consistently steer the ship, eventually to the desired coordinates.

Clarity is what gets us there.

A Lack of clarity sails us to some titillating ports along the way, maybe on a treasure hunt or a cave dive. We return to the surface and think, wait, what am I doing again? Like a cruise ship buffet, we come away with indigestion, over-full of the content we didn’t intend to ingest. This pattern is repeated repeatedly, often for years, until we decide to reign ourselves in and get clear. Until then, we can eat up a tremendous amount of life energy, time, and resources we would prefer to allocate toward what we truly desire for our lives. But in truth, nothing is wasted, so don’t spend too much time here looking back or regretting. The only time is now. Tilt your head instead in the direction you want to go, on purpose.

The trouble is we are unclear exactly where and what we aim for. We are inundated with too much content and alluring distractions, and we can become disconnected from what is truly important to us. Well, we need not miss the mark because we forgot the mark! Enter the Vision Board.

En-Vision: a Ritual for Clear Seeing & Remembering

Vision Boards are fantastic because they help us consciously and unconsciously See and Remember our intentions. As we see the Vision each day, the images and intentions become firmly fixed in our mind’s eye, and this instructs us to stay the course because we remember what we are aiming for, which cuts through the noise of endless distractions, and we get to side-step the buffet. Even on days we are hungry and vulnerable to such things, we can opt out and take the direct boat to shore.

WHAT WE SEE, what we watch, what we read, who we talk to- what we consistently consume matters. This content directs our thinking, speech, visions, and decisions on a day-to-day, moment-to-moment basis. The vision board images, matched clearly with your intentions, will help you steer your ship (consciously and unconsciously) toward the desired destination.

Let’s get after it! I will walk you through the fun process of creating a vision board using Canva.

Step 1: Gather your materials

Before you start creating your vision board, it's essential to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve. Write down your goals and aspirations in different areas of your life: some examples might be extracurricular activities like sports, dance, or career goals, schools, retreats or vacations you dream of friendship or community you would like to build, ideal romantic partner, athletic, physical strength or health aspirations, etc. Once you have your goals written down, you'll need to gather images and words representing them. You can either use your photos or search for ideas online.

Step 2: Create a new design in Canva

Go to Canva.com, create a new account if you don’t already have one, then create a new design. You can choose from various pre-made templates or create a custom size. For my examples here, I typed in “Vision Boards” to the CANVA templates, and several options populated. I tried a few different ones below. Fun!!

Step 3: Add the images you gathered, or you can also search for these within CANVA.

Once your design is set up, you can add images and words to your vision board. Canva has various elements, such as photos, illustrations, and text. You can also upload your own images and add text to them. They also have creatively designed word art and phrases you can use to label and highlight your intentions. Words and especially images communicate directly with your unconscious mind.

Step 4: Arrange your vision board

Once you have all your images and words added to your vision board, you can start arranging them in the most pleasing way. You can group similar goals or create a collage-like arrangement. It is your world, Your vision. Play here. Stop and take a look around. Enjoy.

Step 5: Personalize your vision board

Canva allows you to add personal touches to your vision board, such as adding a background color or pattern, adjusting the opacity of your images, and even adding a filter to your photos. I also put in some quotes and some of their word art, and you can also type in your pieces - prayers, affirmations, or mantras meaningful to you.

Step 6: Download, Print it & Display

Once you're happy with your vision board, download the project and save it on your desktop. You can opt to get the desktop app, which I recommend. Print and Post it in a place you will see every day, frequently. It needs to be in a place you will look at and take it in. You can also use it as your desktop background. The important thing is to display it in a place where you can see it every day, such as on your bedroom wall, bathroom mirror (although don’t do this if it will be harmed by steam), or in your office.

Two Vision Boards I completed as examples using different templates in Canva are shared below:

Vision Board 1

Type “Vision Boards” in Canva Templates

I loved experimenting with different backgrounds.

Vision Board 2

Found the same way, in Canva Templates

I love the simple and clean look of this one.

Creating a vision board using Canva is a fun and easy process. It allows you to organize the images and ideas creatively- trying multiple different layouts. This process simultaneously creates more energy around your goals because you spend time and attention on them. Playing with your visions and intentions also makes more connections within your brain. This is what you want. This is the power of visualization on conscious and unconscious levels; your brain is working on the content you desire!

Give it a try and see how it can help you achieve your goals in the coming year.

Love & light,

Dr. Regina
