Sometimes, I am extremely overwhelmed with emotion...Am I crazy?

"Some people are prone to react in a more intense and out-of-the-ordinary manner toward certain emotional situations, primarily those found in romantic, family and friend relationships. DBT theory suggests that some people’s arousal levels in such situations can increase far more quickly than the average person’s, attain a higher level of emotional stimulation, and take a significant amount of time to return to baseline arousal levels". ~Psych Central

suicide overwhelmed by emotionIf this sounds like something you have often experienced, you might have worried that you were going "crazy". This thought is understandable considering how intense emotions can sometimes feel. Likely my friend, you are not "crazy", but you are indeed human.

Being human is hard, especially when it comes to difficult moods and emotions. Sometimes it feels like you will never climb out of it!!

Some compassionate and empowering psychotherapy would definitely help you to navigate these places and likely help you to feel a bit better about yourself.

Also, you may wish to subscribe to Christy Matta's blog called "Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Understood". Matta has a strong handle on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and she writes clearly, concisely and regularly.

What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)?

DBT was created by Dr. Marsha Linehan and is considered a  mindfulness based therapy (which seem to be everywhere in psychology right now ... other noteworthy mindfulness based therapies include, MB-EAT, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), & Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)).

I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Linehan speak a few years ago at a Mindfulness conference here in San Diego. She packed out the conference hall, likely because she's not only an amazing researcher & clinician, but she's quite genuine, non-judgmental and super funny (that's her pictured to the left). Anyway, MML DBT Borderline Personality DisorderLinehan detailed the story of what prompted her to create DBT. In her early years as a Psychologist, Linehan worked in an inpatient facility. During this time she was bewildered and frustrated in her attempts to help many of the suicidal patients who came to the ward. After some time however, she found a way in. She moved past what she thought she knew about their "case" and into the reality which frightened them. She slowly began to notice some patterns surrounding emotional vulnerability and tolerance.

As stated above, "Some people are prone to react in a more intense and out-of-the-ordinary manner toward certain emotional situations, primarily those found in romantic, family and friend relationships. DBT theory suggests that some people’s arousal levels in such situations can increase far more quickly than the average person’s, attain a higher level of emotional stimulation, and take a significant amount of time to return to baseline arousal levels".

Linehan wanted to find a way to help people to cope during these tidal waves of emotion. DBT was born. The therapy provides tons of interpersonal & practical psychosocial skills, emotional regulation skills and mindfulness based exercises. I find the therapy to be empowering & compassionate...I think it just rocks.
