Therapy Style?
I am down to earth, accepting and easy to talk with. My therapeutic style is rooted in depth psychological theory, cognitive behavioral research, and mindfulness practices.
Therapy is about courageously understanding yourself, consciously changing what you can change and gently, lovingly accepting what cannot, at this time, be changed. Cancer psychotherapy or psycho-oncology is also about this process of gentle understanding, conscious change and acceptance, but the lens is focused on cancer related issues. These might include improving communications with loved ones, coping with side effects or late effects of treatment, clarifying oncologist communications, decision making, increasing your quality of life, self-compassion and care.
In addition to our meetings, I will encourage developing a mindful habit such as journaling, meditation or another contemplative practice. Mindfulness practices have been widely researched and validated and are heavily used in psychotherapy today for this reason. These practices will allow you to connect with yourself more quickly and provide you with powerful tools after our work together has ended.
How often do I need to go to therapy?
Typically we will meet once weekly for 50 minutes, sometimes people choose to come more frequently in times of crisis. Especially at the beginning of treatment, a regular, weekly commitment is important.
How long should I attend therapy?
Longer term therapy is typically helpful in solving long standing patterns and creating lasting changes. Brief supportive counseling can often be useful for moving through a life transition. The length of therapy depends on you and your goals. Research has shown that most people are 75% better in terms of symptom relief within 26 sessions. Others stay in psychotherapy more long term and still others complete therapy within only 8-12 sessions. We will find what is right together.
